Preparation
To get the best results, ensure surfaces to be painted are sound, clean and dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry).
- Wash down previously painted surfaces with a detergent solution to remove all dirt, grease or chalking paint where practicable, rinse off with clean water and allow to dry.
- Carefully scrape back to a firm edge all areas of poorly adhering or defective coatings and rub down thoroughly to ‘key and feather’ broken edges of existing coatings.
- Precautions should be taken during surface preparation of pre-1960s paint surfaces over wood and metal as they may contain harmful lead.
- Treat any areas affected by mould, lichens and algae with .
- Make good minor defects with an appropriate filler. For larger holes and cracks, use a sand and cement mix. Allow to dry.
Application
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions found on the tin. Stir thoroughly, it is recommended that a small test area is applied before painting the entire surface to ensure compatibility.
- Suitable for use on most exterior masonry and rendering concrete, roughcast, pebbledash and brickwork normally suitable for painting, such as rustic or sand faced bricks.
- Do not paint common or fletton bricks. Painting of parapet, free standing and retaining walls below ground level damp-proof course is not advised, as it may be difficult to prevent moisture penetration and consequent failure of the paint coating. Painting this type of wall may also increase the risk of frost damage and spalling of the brickwork or stonework.
- Give the paint a thorough stir before use. If you're painting new or bare surfaces, seal them first with a thinned coat of Dulux Trade Weathershield Smooth Masonry Paint - 1 part clean water to 5 parts paint.
- Apply with a brush, roller or airless spray. Generally 2 coats are required, however if the surface has been previously painted and is in good condition, 1 coat may be enough.
- Coatings applied properly, following full instructions, should give good colour stability for 15 years, as part of BBA certificate 97/3383.
